Once upon a time there were chocolate sandwich cookies that didn’t start and end with an o. (Wait, there still are, but that’s beside the point.) These mystical cookies came from a company cheerily named Sunshine and were reputed to blow Oreos out of the water, taste-wise. In addition, way back when, they were kosher, whereas their competition used lard in its filling.
Those cookies were Hydrox, their name a cunning play on hydrogen and oxygen, despite that they were not watery at all. But Sunshine Biscuits was acquired by Keebler in the 1990s, and by 2003, Hydrox cookies were no longer being manufactured, much to the dismay of many.
But good news is on the horizon. Kellogg (which itself acquired Keebler in 2001—hooray for conglomeratization!) has announced that it will bring back Hydrox for a limited time. Let the hoarding begin!

I have a dear friend who keeps kosher, and had never had an Oreo. Likewise, I had never had a Hydrox. She told me how wonderful they were, and I extolled the Oreo’s virtues. When Oreos finally became kosher, I bought a package of them, and a package of Hydrox, and we had a taste test. The look of bliss on her face as she munched the Oreo was worth waiting years for. She ditched the Hydrox then and there. I, on the other hand was disappointed in the new version of Oreos, but they were still much better than the Hydrox.
Oreos rock while Hydrox cumbles!
Oreos rock while Hydrox crumbles!
We were definitely an Oreo family…… but I have very fond memories of Sunshine FUDGE sandwich cookies. Does anyone else remember these? My siblings and I clearly remember the yellow and brown bag with a spoon dripping fudge filling onto the cookie, but lately no one else seems to know what we’re talking about. Probably requires a birthdate <<1970. Closest thing these days is Dare fudge sandwich cookies.
