Cooking Camps for Kids

When I was a kid, I went to summer camp. We swam in a lake, made lanyards, and sang campfire songs. The food was awful, with the opportunity to roast marshmallows being the culinary high point of the summer. But not today’s foodie kids. These youngsters are going to cooking camp at Sur la Table.

Week-long courses are offered for kids as young as eight, and students can choose between Fun in the Kitchen 101 and Basic Pastry and Baking. In two-and-a-half-hour sessions, students learn how to make Thai green curry, fruit galettes, chicken paillard, and stuffed focaccia.

I think I was 30 before I made my first Thai green curry.

But if you want your 12-year-old to be able to whip you up a nice teriyaki grilled salmon with orange soba noodle salad for dinner when you get home from a long day at the office, you know where to send him or her.

  1. Actually, the Blackmarket Bakery in Irvine is also having a 4-part class this summer for teens “Baking Camp.” It is taught by pastry chef Rachel Klemek (herself a mother of four) with plenty of hands-on practice. On the last day, there is an “Open House” for them to have friends and family come into the bakery to taste the fruits of their labor. For more information, check out their website, blackmarketbakery.com.

But as to what I think – I think that part of fighting the obesity epidemic can be solved simply by teaching kids how to cook for themselves. Kids rely on fast food and low quality food with tons of preservatives pecause their parents often do not have the time to cook for them, and even if they do, they won’t be able to do it forever. Kids learning to cook is essential!
