Cheap but Good

Old Overholt is cheaper and seems to be more readily available than other rye whiskeys, which is why it’s doubly exciting that it’s so good. Try making your Manhattans with Old Overholt and see how quickly they disappear. Our wine and cocktail contributor, Jordan Mackay, describes rye whiskey in his Juice column, noting that Old Overholt is the lightest and most accessible of ryes—traits I didn’t even know I liked in whiskey until I tried OO. Mackay also used the brand in a recipe he developed that was a finalist in the Sherry Cocktail Competition.

  1. This post is spot on. Dollar for dollar, Old Overholt is one of my favorite every-day whiskeys, for sipping or mixing.

  2. Another OO fan here. I’ll also give a shout out to my favorite cheap bourbon whiskey that I discovered through Chowhound years ago: Evan Williams. Nice for sippin, and it even comes in a glass bottle.

  3. Another OO fan here, much worthy of the “Pick!” Here’s hoping this doesn’t compel a run on the stuff, or I will be very sad, indeed.
