Though I am solidly an omnivore myself, I urge those of you trying to decide between an animal-free lifestyle and a carnivorous one to study the photo that accompanies yesterday’s late-to-the-party New York Times piece on relationships between meat-eaters and vegans (and bread-eaters and the gluten-intolerant). In the photo, the vegan woman looks like a young hottie; her husband, only 11 years her senior, looks like he’s part of a different generation altogether. That photo alone will probably convert more women to veganism than the whole print run of Skinny Bitch.

That absolutely does not jibe with what I have encountered. The people that I have met who are actually Vegan (and not Vegetarian) look like Cancer patients.
I would love to know if she was Vegan during any part of her childhood or adolescence.
It is ridiculous and misguided to imply that the looks of these two people are only determined by the diet choice. You could find two vegans that would have the same differences as well as two carnivores. There are many factors that contribute to one’s appearance; yes, diet is one, but to imply that if you were a vegan you wouldn’t look like the guy is downright wrong.
Yeah my unscientific survey is the exact opposite showing how accurate this sort of thing is. All the vegans I know are pretty sallow looking and roly poly because they drink too much beer and eat too much fake cheese and meat. Basically the exact same diet that makes most omnivorous americans fat and unhealthy.
I think that you can have a poor diet whether your a vegan, a vegetarian or a carnivore. You have to pay attention to what you put in your body and how much of it you put in! Exercise plays a big role too. But there is no doubt that carnivores as well as those who eat dairy (to a lesser degree eggs) are at far greater risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure. The medical community has said so many times. But just because you’re a vegan doesn’t mean you can live on potato chips and lettuce salads and expect to be healthy. People have to eat a variety of fruits, veggies and whole grains to maintain health. They also have to exercise. That’s what keeps people young and vital. You also can’t smoke and drink tons of alcohol.
I’m a vegan. And most of the many vegans I know look pretty damned good. The only ones that don’t are the ones that don’t eat right, never exercise or abuse themselves with drugs or alcohol.
