Now that all the important curses of the world—cancer, global warming, lead-tainted toys, Al Qaeda, Comcast—have been dealt with, Spain is ready to address the last remaining problem plaguing mankind: overly generous tippers.
Just in time for Christmas, Spanish economy minister Pedro Solbes made the following declaration, according to the BBC:
‘I see people having a couple of coffees and calmly leaving a euro tip,’ Mr Solbes told a Socialist Party economic forum in the Spanish capital.
‘That’s 50% of the value of the product.’
The “problem,” apparently, is that Spaniards haven’t yet grasped the value of the euro as opposed to the now-defunct peseta.
He raises a point perhaps best described as “interesting but stupid.” Who, precisely, is getting injured by overly generous tips?

the people who leave reasonable tips.
