The Daily Mail reports that a new survey indicates that people who consume energy drinks mixed with alcohol are at greater risk of hurting themselves or being assaulted than those who drink plain old booze.
In the first study of its kind, American researchers questioned 4,271 students from 10 U.S. universities about their drinking habits and the consequences.
They found, compared to those who did not mix caffeine and alcohol they had almost double the risk of being taken advantage of sexually.
In a typical drinking session, they drank up to 36 per cent more than the other students, and they also reported twice as many episodes of weekly drunkenness.
Like most studies, this particular finding may not sufficiently untangle causation and correlation. People who mix energy beverages and alcohol usually hang out with like-minded imbibers, guaranteed to up the chances of mayhem. To quote from one blitzed blog:
I had a Watermelon Martini and one made with strawberrry vodka and Red Bull, yummy. And when I say one, I mean like four… they make you a huge martini and then give you a little shaker that has another one in it… AWESOME!
Yep. Awesome.

Sounds like Darwin was right.
I did make it home okay without any bruises or falling down… but the Strawberry Vodka with the Red Bull was very good… and I was no more dangerous than I am with my typical Vodka Fresca… Thanks for the link though! happy monday!
.. and I was no more dangerous than I am with my typical Vodka Fresca…
You may mean no less dangerous.
Oh pooh- and Irish Coffee can turn you homicidal, right?
Actually I heard this a few years ago from a toxicologist. (SP?) If you drink enough red bull and vodka, it is similar to doing e.
Yes, it is similar to e – although I didn’t fall in love with everyone.
I never even had any energy drinks in the past. One night I went out with friends and had some kind of beer drink with red bull in it. It tasted icky, btw. We drank vodka later on.
I was so full of energy and just totally in a party mood and this lasted for hours. I paid dearly the next day though. :\
I think the dangerous part is that you have so much energy you want to party more more more. I’m not a doctor, so I don’t know.
I think the dangerous part is that you are deliberatley drinking a mixture of chemicals to put you in an altered state. You also have no clue what these chemicals are doing to your body.
This isn’t jsut like drinking a glass of wine or beer with dinner, or even one or two to get a buzz.
You are drinking to get “hyped” or “drunk”, and that is never a good thing!
I tried Red Bull (mixed with gin – ugh!) in Europe about 10 years ago. At that time, the can had warnings on it not to mix it with alcohol or to give it to children.
I must admit though, it is my drink of choice when I am in Vegas…
