The Next Big Television Star Next Door

Amy Finley is The Next Food Network Star, and foodie bloggers mostly seem to approve. Bill Lamb at Reality Cooking looks forward to Finley’s “The Gourmet Next Door” concept, which will air in the fall, and was impressed by her “genuine easy voice with the camera. She really does look and act like someone I might find next door.” Mike at TV Food Fan says he is “still not 100% sold on her cuisine, but I do feel a bit better about her on-camera presence.” Jacob at Food Network Addict was surprised, and not very impressed with the quality of the show. He also links to an interview with ex-contestant Adrien Sharp, who offers this revealing sore-loser quote:

It just blew my mind. It blew everyone’s minds. There was no way Amy would win … and after it was announced, everyone just gathered around [fellow finalist Rory Schepisi], and Amy just stood there with a funny expression on her face.

Blogger Tracey Thompson at Foodie Obsessed, however, appreciated how Finley “grew during the competition,” and admits “the mom in me was rooting for the dreams of our Stay-at-home mom to come true.”

Moms and others wondered, though: What happened to Finley’s husband? Listed in Finley’s Q&A, the mysterious spouse never appeared in the finale’s bio section. Speculation runs rampant. Is he camera-shy? Did they get divorced? Does he work for the government? Should we really care this much?

  1. i thought her a good choice, more down to earth etc..
to be honest i find her to be also a very attractive ( plain jane) type
the other girl Rory was physically the (hottie) but i find that that CAN be a distracting point sometimes
please understand that i am not trying to be sexist or a perv or what

  2. I liked Amy and thought she was the most knowledgable about food, which is kind of, um, important. Rory had a good story, but it’s about the food.

I also thought that the reaction shots were very odd – but only because Rory was crying and not congratulating Amy. Very weird.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they give Rory a show anyway.

  3. Gosh, I hope they don’t give Rory a show anyway. The Next Food Network Star show has very little credibility to begin with, giving the looser a show as well would certainly destroy the few shreds of cred it’s got left. Not to mention make a complete farce out of the whole “voting” process.

It was pretty clear from the beginning that Rory was Bob and Susie’s favorite. They let her slide through several times when she shouldn’t have. But American has spoken, or voted, and they’ve rejected the FNTV busty blond bimbo as food hostess model. Hopefully, the FNTV powers that be will heed the message and figure out that their viewing audience really *is* smarter than a 5th grader and doesn’t need, want or enjoy shows dumbed down to the lowest common denominator.

  4. I think it’s funny that the person that essentially came in third, blew everyone else out of the water in the end.

  5. true enough though JAG is the one who threw a monkey wrench into the gears
