Cool!

Sure, we know you turn to the Grinder for up-to-the-minute food news on topics ranging from trans fats to Top Chef. But, really, it’s just too hot here for hard-hitting. Instead, today we turn to the website Dumb Little Man, which offers us the very secret we’ve been searching for all weekend long (have we mentioned it’s been hot?): “How to Chill a Hot Beer or Soda in 3 Minutes.” Hint: It involves plenty of salt.

  1. Well, that’s all well and good, but who has that much room in their freezer, to put the container with the beers in it? And all I have is expensive sea salt anyway – the curse of being a foodie! I routinely put a bottle of chard in the freezer – I can fit that, and 15 minutes does the trick.

I would like to suggest to the readers, tho, that one delicious way to enjoy a cold beer (preferably in a cold, frosty glass) is while you are taking a shower. Set it outside the shower while you start it, and once you’ve got it going, carefully reach out and bring the beer in. Drink slowly, and feel the cold liquid seep down to your core, while you are getting heated up by the water on the outside. Mmm. Now that is how to drink beer in the summer!

  2. Seldom, if you use expensive sea salt for anything but sprinkling it on finished food you’re wasting your money. When salt is used in cooking, expensive salts provide zero difference of the cheap stuff at the grocery store.

The website says to put the drinks into a tub filled with ice, water, and a few cups of salt, and then to stick the whole thing in the freezer. The ice and water mixture will be around 32 degrees, but the salt dramatically drops the freezing point of the mixture. There’s no need at all to put it in the freezer; the drinks will cool at the same rate since the cold freezer air isn’t nearly as good at retaining temperature as the ice/salt/water mixture.
